The Inner Weighing

How does this sit with you?

The Inner Weighing is the moment in a CultureROOTS reading where you notice how it sits with you — heavy, light, or right. Felt truth treated as real information, never scored.

The Inner Weighing is the moment in a CultureROOTS reading when the numbers and words step back and you are asked to do one thing no score can do for you: to notice how the reading actually sits with you. You set it in front of yourself and feel whether it lands heavy, light, or right. Your response is not measured or graded. The system presents the reading; you alone weigh it.

The name is deliberate. Inner, because only you know how something sits with you. Weighing, because the act has an old and exact meaning, older than any workplace assessment.

The heart and the feather

In the tradition CultureROOTS draws from, a life was understood by laying the heart beside a single feather — the feather of Ma'at — to see whether it sat in balance. The Inner Weighing carries that image into the present as a question offered to you rather than a judgment passed on you. The scale is yours. What is being weighed is how a reading of your working life meets the truth you already carry about it.

This is why the moment matters so much. A reading can be accurate and still not be finished, because a fact about your work becomes usable only once you have felt where it sits. The Inner Weighing is where the accuracy becomes yours.

Heavy, light, or right

There are three ways a reading tends to sit, and each one is information.

It may sit heavy — a strain you have been carrying, perhaps for longer than you had named. Heaviness is not a failing. It is a place asking for care, and in this tradition a heavy place is one to return to rather than one to be marked down.

It may sit light — at ease, nothing owed. Lightness names your ground, the parts of your working life that are holding, and it is worth knowing exactly where that ground is.

Or it may sit right — which is its own distinct answer, the felt sense of something in accord, neither a strain nor merely the absence of one. Right is what a life in balance with the feather was meant to feel like.

None of these is scored, and none is compared against anyone else. They are simply true, and letting them be true is the whole of the practice.

A pause the workplace rarely allows

The Inner Weighing also does something quietly countercultural. Many workplaces teach people to move past what they feel so they can keep functioning, until noticing your own response starts to seem beside the point. This moment invites the opposite. It asks you to pause, and it makes clear that what you notice belongs to you: you do not need to disclose it, justify it, or resolve it. You only need to let it be true long enough to hear what it has to say.

Treating felt response as real information is not softness. The heart carries knowledge the working mind is often trained to override — knowledge about what is sustainable, what is fair, and what has quietly gone wrong. The liberation-psychology tradition, in the work of scholars such as Eduardo Duran, holds that this felt and embodied knowing is a legitimate source of truth, and that recovering it is part of how people heal what a setting has strained. The Inner Weighing is where CultureROOTS makes room for that knowing on purpose.

Where it sits in the reading

The Inner Weighing has a specific place in the journey. It sits at the hinge between MySignal, the reading, and MyCompass, the response — a pause after you have seen clearly and before you are asked to act. In the deeper reading it returns again, principle by principle, so that each part of the picture is felt before it is moved past.

Its purpose there is to keep the work honest. A response built on a reading you have not felt is a plan on paper. A response built on a reading you have weighed is grounded in something true. And when a principle sits heavy, the weighing turns it toward Sankofa: a heavy place is a place to return to with care, and to ask what was disrupted and what becomes possible once it is named.

How the Inner Weighing lives in CultureROOTS

The Inner Weighing is a small moment carrying a large commitment. It says that a person is not a set of scores to be sorted, but someone whose own felt sense of their working life is the final and most important instrument in the reading. Everything the framework measures is offered up to that instrument, to be weighed rather than obeyed.

Notice how this sits with you: heavy, light, or right. However it lands, it is yours, and it is the beginning of knowing what to tend next.
