Signal to Compass is the movement at the heart of CultureROOTS — from a clear reading of a culture to a grounded response. The Signal reads; the Compass responds.

Signal to Compass names the single motion at the center of how CultureROOTS works: the move from seeing a culture clearly to knowing what to do about it. The Signal is the reading — what is true right now, across what people value, how they move, and the conditions they are inside. The Compass is the response — that same picture turned toward the next right move. The Signal reads; the Compass responds.

The two are one motion held in two parts, and the order is deliberate. A reading is allowed to stand on its own before anything is asked of it, so that the response, when it comes, is grounded in something true rather than rushed.

Why the reading comes first

Most tools collapse seeing and doing into a single step, and the doing quietly distorts the seeing — people report what points toward the action they already expect. CultureROOTS holds them apart on purpose. MySignal is written to be received as a mirror: it describes a season honestly, keeps what a person carries separate from what their setting gives back, and asks nothing of them yet. Only once the reading has been seen, and felt, does the Compass open.

Between the two sits the Inner Weighing — the pause where a reading is met as heavy, light, or right before it is acted on. That pause is what keeps the response honest. A response built on a reading a person has not weighed is a plan on paper; a response built on one they have is grounded in what is real.

The Compass is drawn from the Signal

MyCompass does not begin with a new set of questions. It takes the Signal already in hand and turns it toward what might grow from here, at the level that is actually within reach — self, relational, or systemic. Nothing new is extracted; the response is a reading of the reading. This is why the Signal can be a mirror and the Compass a doorway: the mirror shows where you are, and the doorway shows that there is somewhere to go.

The same motion at two levels

Signal to Compass runs at both levels of the framework. For an individual, MySignal becomes MyCompass. For a group, the collective reading, OurSignal, becomes its collective response — a shared picture of what a culture is producing, turned toward what the culture might tend together. They are the same motion at two scales, which is the relational truth Ubuntu names: a person and their culture are always reading and responding to each other.

Seeing clearly and moving wisely are not two separate acts in this work. They are one arc, and holding them in the right order — reading first, response drawn from it — is what lets a culture change on the strength of what is actually true about it.
